  1. Your movie reviews are good and I go by what you recommend! Takes the guesswork out for me and saves a lot of time too. Please review 'Saaz Aur Awaaz' with story outline, etc. I am dying to see this movie but can't find it ANYWHERE. I need to know if it's disappointing as "Door Ki Awaaz' was. I was quite upset that they messed up my favorite lead pair --- Joy Mukerjee and Saira Banu.

  2. sonajoy, thanks for stopping by. I am glad my film reviews prove useful!

I've never heard of Saaz Aur Awaaz - in fact until I stumbled across Door Ki Awaaz and Aao Pyaar Kare (pretty recently), I had no idea Joy-Saira did any movie together except Shagird! If I find the DVD for SAA, I will definitely review it here.

  3. Bollyviewer,
Joy and Saira did five movies together (although only Shagird became a hit despite Saira's inimitable screeching!) --- the three movies you mentioned and Saaz Aur Awaaz and Ye Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai.
If you/anyone has info. on where I can get Joy Mukerjee, Saira Banu and Rajshree movies please post the info. here. Thank you, Sonajoy.

  4. FIVE movies - wow! They looked pretty good together, too (except in Shagird where Saira's screeching really put me off).

As to where to buy these movies, I find them all over the place - DVD stores in North America and India (My favorite Indian store is Rhythm House, Mumbai, which has a great selection and also ships to India and abroad). I've also tried several online stores - Nehaflix. Induna, and Webmall India have a nice selection of oldies and have worked pretty well for me. But, depending upon your location you may land up paying a lot for shipping!

  5. Bollyviewer,
Thanks for the online store info. Unfortunately, none of them have Saaz Aur Awaaz or Yeh Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai. I am searching everywhere for these two DVDs but can't find them. Ultravideo has the latter but won't ship to the US!
I was put off by WebMallIndia in the past because of the bad reviews (disgruntled/irate customer reviews on MouthShut.com, not personal experience) but I may end up buying there because only they have the movies I want. For some reason, VCDs are more popular than DVDs in India --- what gives?
If you/anybody knows of Indian stores (even in Canada/wherever --- sometimes they don't list online but I can call/check their website) please post info. here.
I like your blog, BViewer. It's a great fun place to visit! Appreciate the time and effort you put into everything. Thank you so much for the good work.

  6. You're welcome, Sonajoy!

Have you tried talking to your local Indian-DVD store people? They regularly order DVD shipments and might be able to get the movies for you at cheaper rates. Webmall isnt great (slow and v. expensive shipping, bad customer service, etc) but they do have a good selection. I was puzzled by the abundance of VCDs on their site, though. I dont think VCDs are more popular in India (I had a hard time getting VCDs in India for most of the movies I wanted and had to shell out more for the DVDs) just that webmall and induna seem to come out with VCDs for rare oldies.

  7. Well, I finally got several VCDs including Yeh Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai (but not Saaz Aur Awaaz!)from Linux Bazaar, an online retailer headquarted in New Delhi with a satellite base in New Jersey. I am impressed with their service --- I called their NJ # and got no reply but they called back within an hour! Their website is well organized --- easy to navigate, flicks are listed alphabetically (unusual for similar websites)and you can actually access your order!
Some info. I wanted to share with everybody....most people rent Bollywood movies from Netflix but iTalkies specializes in Bollywood and other Indian lanuage movie rentals. They have a much larger selection and their rental plan is good too. I am addicted to Netflix because it has the genres I love --- British Drama movies and TV including Masterpiece Theater, period movies, movies based on books (I am a voracious reader), hard to find movies, etc.
Enough said about this....don't wanna take up anymore blog space. But if anybody finds Saaz Aur Awaaz DVD/VCD please post info. here! Thank you.

  8. More sources of DVDs! Thanks Sonajoy. Just contain your sould in patience there are "new" old movies coming out on VCDs and DVDs everyday. My stock has been piling up and needless to say, my bank account has been feeling rather starved because of it!!!

  11. Thanks for the list of movies. At times I almost wish I lived in the US when I read of all the options available for obtaining Indian DVDs. Thanks to the high cost shipping all the way up here to Aotearoa, each and every one of my DVDs has probably cost on average around $12-$15US, which both explains why I only have 80 or so and why I have to be very certain I'm not going to regret a purchase before making it. That is where blogs like yours provide me with invaluable assistance. :)

  12. You are welcome, Maxqnz. Have you tried checking movies on Rajshri and Bigflix? Both sites have legitimate prints up for free viewing or paid download. And Rajshri has an excellent selection of oldies (Hindi as well as Bangla and Tamil). Most of the films are unsubtitled, though. So, if you dont need subtitles, its a very good option, given how hard it is for you to get movies down under.

  13. Most of the films are unsubtitled, though. So, if you dont need subtitles, its a very good option

Aye, there's the rub. On a good day I can get 80% of well-enunciated dialogue without subtitles but it is very hard work. When I went to the cinema to see Lage Raho Munnabhai they forgot to put up the subs for the first 10 minutes and although I kept up, I was thinking that I would be mentally shattered by the end of the film. :)

  14. Look on the bright side - you may become a fluent Hindi speaker after watching un-subtitled movies! You could try torrents too - they almost always have subtitles and you can download stuff anywhere in the world!

  15. you may become a fluent Hindi speaker after watching un-subtitled movies

Yes, that's true. I have a copy of Chalti ka Naam Gaadi which I still haven't watched because it's unsubbed. That should be incentive enough.

  16. I wonder whats with Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi DVDs - mine isnt subtitled either. I so wanted to show it to a non-Hindi speaking friend and couldnt because of that. Is your copy bought in India, too?

For un-subtitled movies though, oldies are not a good choice. Its better to start with newer movies that use more Hinglish. Older ones have language that even I find difficult to understand sometimes - the Urdu in Muslim Socials or historicals, for example.

  17. For un-subtitled movies though, oldies are not a good choice.

I would tend to disagree. I find the diction much clearer in older films, and love the language in the Muslim Socials. Give me heavily Urdu over heavily-sanskritised shuddh any day. I obviously miss some of the vocabulary, but I would much rather watch something like Mughal-e-azam with the subs off that some trendy Hinglish-filled release of the last 5 years or so. The reason I've stayed away from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi so far is that I know my Hindi is not up to the jokes yet.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The diction is certainly way clearer in oldies, but I would think the language is a lot harder. A lot of the words used in 50s/60s movies have fallen out of common use in the last couple of decades and the teenagers of today's India would have a hard time recognising the meanings of some of them! If you can follow it, your Hindi is way better than you think. So go for Chalti... - the language is simple and the jokes are more situational than semantic. Moreover, the broad facial expressions of everybody would let you in on the jokes, even if the dialogues are incomprehensible!

Thank you, you are not the first to tell me that. I shall put the kind assessment to the test and unwrap my CKNG
